Opening a File
Opening a file in Laminar means creating a new matter and associating it with a client. This guide walks through the process from start to finish.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”Make sure you have:
- A client record (or the information to create one)
- The type of matter you’re opening (e.g., residential purchase, sale, refinance)
- Any relevant property or transaction details
1. Create the matter
Section titled “1. Create the matter”From the main navigation, select New Matter. You’ll choose:
- The matter type (which determines the workflow)
- The client (search for an existing client or create a new one)
- An assignee (who is responsible for this file)
2. Enter initial details
Section titled “2. Enter initial details”Fill in the key details for the matter:
- Property address
- Transaction dates (closing date, completion target)
- Parties involved (buyers, sellers, agents, other lawyers)
3. Review and confirm
Section titled “3. Review and confirm”Laminar creates the matter in the first workflow status and assigns it to the selected team member. From here, the matter follows its workflow through to closing.
What happens next
Section titled “What happens next”Once the matter is created:
- It appears in the assignee’s work queue
- Tasks may be automatically generated based on the matter type
- The matter is unscheduled by default — the assignee should schedule it or begin working on it
