Key Dates & Events
Events are the matter’s key dates: the closing, the signing appointment, the conditions deadline. They live in the matter’s Events section, drive the dashboard’s deadline widgets, and (when you choose) show in the client portal as Key Dates.
Events answer “when is this happening?” Tasks answer “what do I do about it?” A closing date is an event; “prepare closing documents” is a task scheduled a few days before it.
Adding an Event
Section titled “Adding an Event”From the matter’s Events section, add an event: pick the type, a title, the date (all-day, or timed with a timezone), optional notes, and whether it’s Visible in client portal.
Small conveniences and their edges:
- For multi-day events, the end date auto-fills to match the start date until you touch it; after that it’s yours to manage.
- Some types allow only one active event per matter: a matter can’t have two Closing Dates. If the date changed, edit the existing event rather than adding another; Laminar will insist.
The Built-in Types
Section titled “The Built-in Types”Expected Completion Date is the anchor: it shows in the matter header with business days remaining, feeds the Today’s Closings dashboard, and is usually set right from the matter summary.
Closing Date and Possession Date: one each, client-visible by default.
Signing Appointment: as many as needed, client-visible by default.
Conditions Deadline: as many as needed, hidden from clients by default.
Your firm can add custom types; see Event Types.
Portal Visibility
Section titled “Portal Visibility”Each event has its own portal toggle, defaulted by its type. The client seeing their signing appointment in the portal saves a phone call; the client seeing your internal requisition deadline invites one. Check the toggle when the event is sensitive, and see The Client Portal for the full picture of what clients see.
Changed Plans
Section titled “Changed Plans”Dates move; edit the event and every view updates, including the client’s. A cancelled event is cancelled, not deleted: it disappears from the matter and portal but stays in the record, visible under “Show cancelled.”
